Background of the Study
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) education plays a crucial role in preventing waterborne diseases, improving public health, and promoting sustainable hygiene practices at the household level (WHO, 2024). Poor WASH practices contribute to the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid fever, which disproportionately affect communities with inadequate access to clean water and proper sanitation.
In Niger State, many households lack access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities, leading to a high prevalence of hygiene-related illnesses (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). WASH education initiatives aim to improve household hygiene by raising awareness about handwashing, safe water storage, and proper waste disposal. However, the extent to which these education programs have influenced household hygiene behavior in Niger State remains unclear.
This study seeks to examine the effect of WASH education on household hygiene practices, assessing its impact on disease prevention and community health in Niger State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by health organizations and government agencies to promote WASH education, many households in Niger State still practice poor hygiene habits, leading to persistent outbreaks of waterborne diseases (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Limited awareness, cultural practices, and lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities hinder the effectiveness of these interventions.
This study investigates the effectiveness of WASH education in improving household hygiene in Niger State and identifies barriers to its successful implementation.
