Background of the Study

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) education plays a crucial role in preventing waterborne diseases, improving public health, and promoting sustainable hygiene practices at the household level (WHO, 2024). Poor WASH practices contribute to the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid fever, which disproportionately affect communities with inadequate access to clean water and proper sanitation.

In Niger State, many households lack access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities, leading to a high prevalence of hygiene-related illnesses (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). WASH education initiatives aim to improve household hygiene by raising awareness about handwashing, safe water storage, and proper waste disposal. However, the extent to which these education programs have influenced household hygiene behavior in Niger State remains unclear.

This study seeks to examine the effect of WASH education on household hygiene practices, assessing its impact on disease prevention and community health in Niger State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts by health organizations and government agencies to promote WASH education, many households in Niger State still practice poor hygiene habits, leading to persistent outbreaks of waterborne diseases (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Limited awareness, cultural practices, and lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities hinder the effectiveness of these interventions.

This study investigates the effectiveness of WASH education in improving household hygiene in Niger State and identifies barriers to its successful implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of WASH education among households in Niger State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of WASH education on household hygiene practices.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the successful implementation of WASH education programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of WASH education among households in Niger State?
  2. How does WASH education influence household hygiene practices?
  3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of WASH education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. WASH education has no significant impact on household hygiene practices.
  2. There is no significant relationship between WASH education and the reduction of waterborne diseases.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the effectiveness of WASH education programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on households in both urban and rural areas of Niger State, assessing the impact of WASH education on hygiene practices. Limitations include variations in access to clean water, differences in educational levels, and cultural perceptions of hygiene.

Definitions of Terms

  • WASH Education: Programs aimed at improving awareness of water, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
  • Household Hygiene: Sanitation and cleanliness practices followed within homes to prevent disease.
  • Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by pathogens present in contaminated water sources.
